Apprenticeship

Welcome to midwifery!!!!  It is an incredible journey…

To begin with, here are some useful terms and acronyms you will come across frequently…

Licensed Midwife (LM)
Certified Professional Midwife (CPM)
Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
North American Registry of Midwives (NARM)
Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA)
NM Department of Health (DOH)

In New Mexico, there are three different ways to become a Licensed Midwife; through an academic program, through the NARM Portfolio Evaluation Process (PEP), and through a direct-entry apprenticeship with the NM Department of Health.  The academic and clinical requirements of the first two options, an academic program and NARM’s PEP process, are set by the program and by NARM respectively, so you will have to research each individually.  With both of these processes you will apply to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) through NARM and then after receiving that you will apply for a NM License through the DOH.  The final approach, direct-entry apprenticeship through the DOH, will allow you to become a NM Licensed Midwife and then you can apply for the CPM.  Below you will find the forms you will need for this final option as well as some other useful documents.

Once you have completed the academic and clinic aspects of your education and turned in all the required paperwork to the proper institutions you will be eligible to take first the NARM Written Exam and then the NM LM Rules and Guidelines Exam.  Once you have received notice of passing both exams you must apply to the respective institutes to become a LM (see DOH link below for these forms) and a CPM (see NARM’s site for the proper forms).

NM Department of Health Forms

You can download the DOH Apprenticeship forms below, or you can find them at http://nmhealth.org/PHD/midwife_roster.shtml, where you will also find the applications for your midwifery license once you have completed your education.

About Us

Serving the Community since 1977

New Mexico has a rich history of community midwifery. Midwives have always been an integral part of New Mexico’s health care system. The New Mexico Midwives Association (NMMA) incorporated in 1977 to insure women’s access to safe and personalized care throughout all the cycles of their lives. The NMMA has worked consistently to enable licensed midwives to attend the births of thousands of New Mexican babies with excellent outcomes.
